I'm with Chris on team Jason, and fuck off Evan. Ella not realizing Jason is super into her is going to get Jason hurt if she dates Evan. Ella not seriously considering humans narrows down the options for the series OTP, if it starts in book 1; though at the moment that only leaves Caleb, and she doesn't seem to be thinking about him in that way thus far. Ohh! This also tells us that her ex is Aitherion.
I also picked up she hasnt *wanted* to draw in 5 or so months- which means she didn't want to draw wven before her parents and grandma died. I feel like there is an important reason for that, that you aren't sharing with us yet 👀.
I realize you did give us a lot on the Violet/Jason tension in this chapter - with Violet being mad that they didn't do more to find Clara- when she couldn't even do more to find Clara. There are so many layers there that my poor ol' foggy brain just can't work through at the moment, but is super excited about. I'm also really curious about the Paige vision... Paige's wall of pictures and connections has a very "murder board" vibes (even if Paige's apathy is giving more creeper vibes) - like she's been investigating what happened ti Clara. Which I think goes along with her whole welcome week initiative that she's put in place *since* Clara went missing, like she feels responsible for not helping her find her place so now she must figure out what happened. (Also, Clara hasn't been missing all that long, and I can't imagine the school gets new students very often - is Ella's welcome week the first actual welcome week?) On the otherhand...Paige Paxman better not be the goddamn Watcher. Yes we know Paige is in the video footage, and the Watcher thinks "Paige and Violet argue" in the art room...but IDK, you're a tricky one Megan... I'm waiting for something to break my heart this book so I have to give the BFF who would feel like total betrayal some side-eye. It also would add a whole 'nother level of Paige baiting the wolf. Which, btw, all the werewolf jokes were excellent.
Finally for tonight what an end of the chapter. Holy crap. I can't wait for next week (I mean, I never can but thats besides the point).
I'm so glad you picked up on the timeline and aitherion ex!
Using information about Ella's life before the book to do things like drop in her wanting nothing to do with drawing even before her family died is fun for me because I get to giggle and feel clever, but I never know if it actually comes across in the text to readers.
I love getting to have reader responses while I'm writing! Substack is the best!
And I completely understand you're not trusting me with a BFF. After what happened to our favorite BFF, I wouldn't trust me either.
